Hello, my name is Katelyn Bullock, and this year marks the final chapter in my journey of raising livestock—a passion that has guided my ambitions and future in agriculture. As a recent graduate of Southern High School and the current Maryland FFA State Reporter, I’m dedicating this gap year to serving our agricultural community before pursuing dual degrees in food science and animal science at Oklahoma State University. Throughout my time in the Southern FFA Chapter, where I’ve served as an officer, and my earlier years in the Harwood 4-H Club, livestock has always been a big part of my life.
This year, I’m presenting a group of animals I’ve worked hard to raise, including a market steer, market swine, a breeding gilt, and market goats. One of the standouts in my lineup is Spur, my Boer market goat. Boer goats are known for their muscular build, quick growth, and high-quality meat, but getting Spur to this point hasn’t been a smooth ride. It’s taken a lot of determination; honestly, there were some tough days along the way. Spur showed promise from the beginning but also came with challenges. Getting his diet right was a bit of a balancing act—trying to ensure he was gaining the right amount of weight without overfeeding or underfeeding him. Sometimes, I had to adjust his feed, troubleshoot when things didn’t go as planned, and learn on the fly when something unexpected came up. Training Spur has been another adventure. He wasn’t always the easiest to work with, and there were moments when we weren’t making any progress. But with patience and consistency, we got there. He’s not perfect, but we’ve built a solid bond, and I’m proud of how far he’s come.
Raising a goat-like Spur is hard work—it’s messy, frustrating at times, and doesn’t always go according to plan. But that’s what makes this journey so rewarding. Seeing Spur’s growth and improvement is a reminder that all the effort, even the parts that didn’t go perfectly, has paid off. As I look ahead to my future studies, I’m contacting the community to support my journey. By bidding on Spur or any of my other livestock, you’re not just buying an animal but investing in the next generation of agriculture. The funds raised will directly support my education at Oklahoma State, where I plan to continue learning and growing in food science and agriculture. I invite you to place your bid today. Let’s work together to build the future of agriculture, one animal at a time.
