Since this is my senior year of high school, there have been a lot of “lasts”- last football season; last pole vaulting season, last time to show a pig for FFA, last homecoming, etc.  However, along with all the lasts there have also been some of the greatest firsts as well.  Applying for college and being accepted to the university I have always dreamed of attending - Texas A&M University, achieving Eagle Scout rank in the boy scouts, applying for scholarships and even taking and passing the Physical Fitness Test for the US Marine Corps.  The first that has been one of the most challenging but at the same time most rewarding was participating in the calf scramble and getting to raise a steer to show at the Houston LIvestock Show.

Knowing that the only way I could show a project steer was if I caught in a calf scramble really helped motivate me to catch one of those crazy calves.  It may sound weird, but what started out as a wild and frantic run around the rodeo arena to drag in a calf, turned out with me having a steer that has been one of the most stable and calming things in my life this year.  Don’t get me wrong, raising a steer has kept me on my toes, but at the same time, the day-to-day washing, drying, and working with my steer seemed to balance out everything else I had, and still have, going on my senior year.

I previously showed 8 pigs over 2 years so feeding and working wasn't new to me. The challenge was getting them to warm up to me. It took a lot more time to even put a halter on the calf that it did to get the pigs to move with a stick. After a while though it was just a classic montage of working with them day in and day out.  Consistency and repetition daily without fail and a deep down determination to win Grand Champion. Basically 4 months went by with numerous ups and downs but nothing drastic. Then the biggest low and something I never imagined would happen, was the loss of my other Calf Scramble calf, Duchess. She came down with pneumonia and unfortunately it was fatal. She passed with her head in my arms and with my steer,  Duke, trying to figure out what was going on. Trying to give me and her kisses through the stall panel wasn't exactly the best thing but still so sweet. Luckily I had also been working on completing my Eagle Scout rank and finished it up that week.  Dropping off my Eagle Scout binder with my scoutmaster was such a feeling of accomplishment and relief.. I had spent nearly a decade working towards that goal. If that period had taught me anything it was to push through the darkness till you find some light.

The summer with my project calves was pretty tough. At my school we have summer workouts for football with 2 to 3 hours of running and lifting weights. After I finished working out, I would go straight to the barn to do my duties there; so after pushing myself to the limit I had to wrestle a 900 pound Simmental that sometimes wanted to act like a dog. So after a long hot and sweaty summer, I was actually ready for  school to start, but it seemed like it would never come. It would be my senior year and show season would finally be on the horizon. Then bam… it all hit me at once. This is my senior year, my last year of truly being a kid.  Last year of high school football, last track meet, and probably the last time to be in the show arena. In less than a year, I will go to the big scary place called college. I didn’t  know for sure at the time, but I would get accepted by my dream college, Texas A&M and go into the Corps of Cadets. I have to admit...it scares me a little bit.   What scares me the most is the unknown. Not knowing what's going to happen tomorrow. Not knowing if all the effort I put into Duke will be for nothing like Duchess. Not knowing if in a couple years I'm on tour in the military and will take my last breath. But living in fear means your not living. I worked my butt off for Duke so that he can be the best looking steer that I can make him. What I’ve learned with raising and showing Duke is that you will never know what can or can't happen. Over this year Duke has taught me the importance of discipline, that hard work pays off, that I should always pay attention to detail, and never give up.

Even though I wasn't able to expierence my last show as a senior, I'm grateful for this opportunity to not only share my story, but to raise such an amazing animal. I'm hopeful that this auction will help me raise money to use for attending Texas A&M University, and toward achieving my ultimate goal of serving in the armed forces as well as becoming a large and small animal veterinarian.
